It took a while for them to track down Mark Hams. It was hard to track down any one person on a cruise ship, really. There were so many activities taking place during the day at sea, that he could really be anywhere on the ship. There were several decks of the ship, each level devoted to the happiness of the passengers. They looked in the dining rooms and the small clubs, but to no avail. The pool was full, but Mark wasn’t there.

A passenger asked Hope a question about the night’s entertainment on a lower deck, and Hope told her the time and places of the evening's events. Hope could tell that Felix was impressed with her event knowledge. Despite the concern of finding out who killed Dowel, Hope had to grin to herself. They moved on to the other side of the ship narrowly avoiding a family with two young children who were playing around on the deck. Hope helped the parents corral the children and told them about a magician who was going to be performing in half an hour on a lower deck. The parents thanked Hope and the children had a reason to behave. Hope and Felix asked several employees if they had seen Mark, but no one seemed to know anything. Eventually, though, they learned of someone up on the top deck who had set up an easel. Hope, recalling that at the auction Mark had mentioned that he himself was a painter, felt that it was likely that he was the one up on the top deck.

Hope and Felix headed to the highest deck passengers had access to, and sure enough, there was Mark. He was stationed at the bow of the ship, his easel set up with various paints surrounding him as he worked tirelessly on his canvas. Several people were lounging about on the deck’s lawn chairs watching him with idle curiosity. He was painting the scene before him, the ship’s bow. The bow itself took up very little of the canvas as he seemed to be planning on adding a sunset background soon, though at the moment he was strictly working on the ship portion of the masterpiece.

“Looking good,” Hope said, and Mark turned his head and smiled.

He looked slightly embarrassed. “Ah, Felix and Hope,” he said. “Wished you had snuck up when I was a little further along than this.”

“I like it,” Hope said. “Are you going to be painting the horizon in the background too?”

“That’s the plan,” he said. “Didn’t know if I was actually going to do any painting on this cruise, but I was inspired after the auction. Couldn’t help myself. I had brought all of this because I thought about painting a scene while we were in the Bahamas, but the ocean view was hard to resist.”

“You’re talented,” Felix said.

He shrugged. “It’s just a hobby,” Mark assured them. “I don’t expect to see my art in an auction anytime soon. Though I do enjoy it, so I suppose that’s what matters.
